Blond Blonde
My hair is now 2 colors, blond and light brown. Since I got pregnant my hair has come in a much darker blonde

and there is an obvious growth line. I am not opposed to the new color, but what should I do to make it look more natural now? Match the new color and dye my hair all the new darker blonde or add lighter blonde highlights to the darker roots to blend it a bit? Thanks in advance!

well, it depends on which color you like best. Either one you like go and use that as a highlight (or lowlight) and that should help even things out without going crazy.

Child Red
What’s this red-headed step-child everyone is always talking about?

I always hear weird references to “red headed step-child” where is that from and what does it mean?

Red hair, whether ‘ginger’,auburn,or copper-hued,is suppose to be a sign of a fiery and ungovernable temper,or of a passionate disposition of love. There for,it is thought to be harder to love or be loved by “a red headed step child”.

Darth Vader

According to the Arthritis Foundation, over 21 million people have osteoarthritis with women more commonly afflicted than men. But arthritis spares no one. It often starts in middle age and is most common in older people. But children and young adults can also get it.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is the process of wearing of bone against bone that causes debilitating pain severe enough to restrict activities involving the affected joint.

Medical experts don’t know the exact cause of osteoarthritis. What they know is that a person’s immune system attacks his or her own body tissues. Research shows that genes, environment, and hormones among others are factors that cause osteoarthritis.

A perfect example of someone who suffered arthritis at a very young age was David Prowse. He was the original and ultimate screen villain Darth Vader of the Star Wars trilogy. For reel, Darth Vader brought terror throughout the universe. For real, Prowse is battling another villain – osteoarthritis. The 65-year-old actor has been dueling with the progressive joint disease since age 13.

“I was misdiagnosed actually,” recalls the former British weightlifting champion. “My knee swelled up rather badly after doing some sprinting. The doctors told me I had tuberculosis of the knee.”

Prowse spent the next 18 months “imprisoned” in a hospital and immobilized in leg splints and braces. But after his tuberculosis tests repeatedly came back negative, doctors finally realized Prowse had “juvenile arthritis” and immediately prescribed exercise.

Prowse’s early onset of osteoarthritis isn’t common. But the disease is. Osteoarthritis is more likely to affect your hips or knees, and also the end joints on your fingers, but it can affect any joint. Treatments such as injections to the joint can help, but if the joint is worn, the question of surgery may be raised.

There are operations to reduce the wear and tear of the joint but the major procedure used these days is a joint replacement. Though other joints can be replaced, hip replacement has been done for a long time and in recent years knee replacements have also become widely used. Your family doctor and your specialist will discuss the pros and cons of these procedures.

It is wise not to embark on joint replacement too soon as we are living longer these days and the replacement is likely to wear out or go wrong after a number of years. Subsequent options for further surgery are limited.

There are a number of complementary medical approaches to osteoarthritis. You can always try the most complete joint health supplement available today. Phosoplex helps reduce joint pain and stiffness. Check out www.phosoplex.com and find out how it can help your joint.

Hand Cuffs

Hand Cuffs

Rotator cuff exercises will restore strength and mobility in the shoulder, eliminate pain and help strengthen the shoulder to prevent future rotator cuff injuries. None of the following rotator cuff injury exercises should cause pain. If they do, stop and talk to your medical professional for advice.

Exercise 1. This exercise will help loosen up the shoulder before getting into the other rotator cuff exercises. Stand with your feet shoulder wide and bend over so you are horizontal to the floor. Slowly rotate your bad arm in small circle motions gradually increasing the width of the circles. Do fifteen rotations and 3 sets.

Exercise 2. Using your injured arm, reach up and across the chest and put the arm behind the shoulder. Now place your other hand behind the elbow and apply gentle pushing. Hold the stretch for about 10 seconds and repeat 3 or 4 times.

Exercise 3. Grab a towel and using your good arm, sling it across your good shoulder. Reach behind your back with your injured arm and grasp the towel. Smoothly pull on the towel so it pulls the injured arm upward. Hold for at least 10 seconds and do 3 to 4 sets. This exercise can be difficult to do in the initial stages of a rotator cuff injury so if it causes to much pain don’t do it.

Exercise 4. Find a door frame or use the corner of a room. Place both hands on the edge of the frame and gently lean forward. Hold the stretch for ten seconds and repeat 3-4 times.

Exercise 5. For this and the following rotator cuff exercises you will need a piece of rubber tubing about 2 to 3 feet long. Grip the tubing with both hands horizontal to the floor (you can do this exercise either sitting or standing). Now, tuck the elbow of the injured arm into your side and rotate the hand outwards. Hold for 10 seconds and do 3 or 4 sets.

Exercise 6. Side raises. Grab your rubber tubing. Let one end dangle on the floor and stand on it. Gently lift your injured arm out from your side. Hold for ten seconds and repeat 3-4 times.

Exercise 7. Front raises. This is similar to the previous rotator cuff exercises except you will lift your arm to the front rather than the side. Again, stand on the end of the tubing and then slowly raise your injured arm up to the front of your body as far as it will go. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 3-4 times.

These are just a few basic rotator cuff exercises to get you started before starting a more advanced rotator cuff strengthening program which will help prevent future injuries.

Stretching however, is the best way to start conditioning muscles and tendons of the shoulders. Stretching improves flexibility and mobility. Do them every day and avoid exercises and movements that will make you reach up. This will further impinge the tendons and talk to your doctor or physio about other rotator cuff exercises and the correct form for each. Good luck with your dodgy shoulders!

Billy Bob

Billy Bob

Tamara Kaye Sellman of the Writer’s Rainbow Literary Services asserts on the cover of my gay detective novel, The DVD Murders, “The time for gay protagonists in all sorts of commercial fiction has come.” Has it? Is the straight world really ready for an invasion of gay heroes into all genres of mainstream fiction, such as fantasy, romance and mystery? Will the girl next door become the boy next door, Plain Jane, Plain Jim, or the clueless husband, the clueless domestic partner?

Gay characters have made great strides on network television. The Jodie Dallas character as portrayed by Billy Crystal on Soap in the late 1970s is generally regarded as the first openly gay male as a regular cast member in a series. Thinking has progressed until we now have such credible gay characters as the precocious Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty and the sociopath Andrew Van De Kamp on Desperate Housewives.

Sometimes you may get the impression that everywhere you look on TV these days you see a gay, lesbian, or bisexual character. Not quite. According to estimates by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) such characters account for only 2.6 percent of all the regular characters in TV Series in 2008-2009 season. While that was up from 1.1 percent of the previous year and was a positive sign, more work is needed to achieve fair balance. Cable, with its two gay-oriented channels, Logo and here, customarily offers a greater number of GLBT characters.

Hollywood, on the other hand, has not kept pace and seems stuck in the twentieth century. True, the major studios have turned out many films with gay characters over the years. Most of them, however, have been in minor roles, such as the flighty costume designer in Broadway Melody, closeted characters like the female schoolteacher in The Children’s Hour, stereotype jokes, such as the policeman in Wild Hogs, or victims like the AIDS patient in Philadelphia.

In the four years since the groundbreaking Brokeback Mountain the major studios have only produced one gay film, the award-winning Milk. Hollywood execs claim a lack of high-quality gay scripts or that TV has a lot more time over the course of a series to develop a character whose sexuality is only a part of his life while a film only has two hours. Others suggest movie executives tend to be older and therefore less comfortable with homosexuality.

Whatever the reason, Hollywood is out of touch. Attitudes have changed, particularly among young people who tend to be more accepting of alternative lifestyles. Unfortunately, as of yet, this acceptance has not carried over into mainstream mysteries. Ask any typical mystery lover: when was the last time you read a whodunit that had a gay detective?

Gay characters have appeared in mystery novels for a long time, but like the movies they were mostly cast in minor roles as villains, victims or freaks. It wasn’t until Joseph Hansen introduced the Dave Brandstetter series that we had a detective–here an insurance investigator–who was unashamedly and unapologetically gay.

The relative success of the Hansen novels paved the way for other gay protagonists and was followed by the breezy mysteries of Nathan Aldyne’s gay gumshoe Daniel Valentine, the lesbian amateur sleuth Jane Lawless in the Ellen Hart books, and many others. Few, however, have made the crossover to mainstream mysteries, unless you count the Alex Delaware novels of Jonathan Kellerman which feature Milo Sturgis, a gay cop friend of the protagonist or the lovable bisexual psychopath Tom Ripley in the Patricia Highsmith novels.

Despite the many advances made for gays and lesbians, and in particular the legalization of same-sex marriages in a growing number of states, some readers because of religious beliefs or prejudice are simply not ready to accept a gay protagonist in a mystery novel or any other work of fiction. That’s too bad, especially if you are a mystery fan, since not only do these novels provide us with more rounded and realistic images of gays and lesbians but some of them are simply crackerjack mysteries.
