Uno. Asset Allocation is an investment planning tool, not an investment strategy… few investment professionals understand the distinction. Investment strategies are used to implement the asset allocation formula that investment planning produces. Many investors incorrectly believe that investment planning and financial planning are one and the same. Financial planning is the broader concept, one that involves such non-investment considerations as: Wills and Estates, insurances, budgeting, trusts, etc. Investment Planning takes place within the Trusts, Endowments, IRAs, and other Brokerage Accounts that come into existence as a result of, or without, Financial Planning.

Zwei. Asset Allocation is a planning tool that allows the investor to structure his or her investment portfolios in a manner most likely to accomplish the goals established for each portfolio and for the investment program as a whole. It is the process of planning how the portfolio is to be divided between the two broad classes of investment securities: Equities and Income. Security sub-classes have little relevance, and should be avoided. K.I.S.S.

Tres. Equities are the riskier of the two classes of securities, but not because of the price fluctuations that are their basic character trait. They are riskier because they represent ownership in a business enterprise that could fail. The risk of capital loss can be moderated or minimized in the security selection process and with a management control activity called diversification. The primary purpose for buying Equities is to sell them for capital gains, not to save them as trophies to brag about in chat rooms. But, they can be screened and selected in a manner that can make them less risky than other, non-fixed income, investments and speculations.

Shi. Income securities are less risky than equity securities because they represent debt of the issuing entity, and owners of debt securities have a “superior” claim on the assets of the issuer. Stockholders have to rely on their salivating class-action attorneys to mitigate their losses if the company fails. With proper selection criteria and diversification, the risk of capital loss is negligible and price fluctuations can be mostly ignored except for the trading opportunities that they provide. The primary purpose of these securities is income generation, either for current consumption or for use later in life. Capital gains here should be taken… and bragged about in those chat rooms.

Cinque. An Asset Allocation Formula is a long-range, semi-permanent, planning decision that has absolutely nothing to do with market timing or hedging of any kind. It is designed to produce the combination of Capital Growth and Income that will achieve the long-range personal (pay those bills) goals of the individual. Thus, it must not be tinkered with because of expectations about anything, or rebalanced arbitrarily because of natural changes in the market values of one asset class or the other. An asset allocation mutual fund is an oxymoron.

Hat. Asset Allocation is the only proven cure for inflation. If properly managed using The Working Capital Model, it will almost certainly increase the level of portfolio income by more than the rate of inflation, which is a measure of the purchasing power of your dollars, not the dollar value of your purchased securities. Any 100%-equity investment portfolio, regardless of size, is less inflation proof than any same-size, more balanced, portfolio. This is because the income on equities, and the capital gains that they may produce, are not contractual, and too often ignored when they do make an appearance.

Sju. In addition to the potential of failing to keep up with inflation using an Equity Only asset allocation, regardless of your age, greed management becomes much more of a problem. In a rising market, evidenced by the presence of more profit taking opportunities than lower priced bargains, investors tend to take positions in lower quality issues, current story stocks, newer issues, etc… just to be in there. A 30% or so Fixed Income allocation can be a major focus factor, and it will keep the base income line moving upward.

Tam. Many investors, and even a large number of Investment Professionals, think that income securities have some claim to price stability in addition to their role in providing present or future disposable income. They just don’t, and their prices may fluctuate in either direction in anticipation of changes in expectations about the direction of interest rates.

Isishiyagalolunye. If you focus exclusively on market value, dwell upon comparisons of your unique portfolio with the market averages, expect performance of some kind during specific time intervals, and listen intently when someone speaks about the future, any asset allocation work you do will be ineffective.

Desyat. Cash is not an investment and, therefore, is not a class of assets within an asset allocation model. Most entities that include cash or money market balances in their portfolio mix are using it as a hedge against market movements in one direction or the other… in the future. This is a market-timing effort that has no place in asset allocation planning or thinking. Asset allocation transcends both short-term market trends and long-term market cycles.

Ears Hat

Contemplating a hat but not sure if you can pull it off? Don’t worry – hats have come a long way. Popular styles are seen on celebrity heads everywhere as hats hit the fashion scene with a bang. But don’t let their good looks fool you – hats are just as functional as they are stylish.

Check out the top 5 reasons to get a hat on:

1. Make a Fashion Statement – Have you ever wished you were one of those cool people who could sport a hat and wear it like you owned it? Well you can. Hats come in so many different styles, shapes and fabrics that there is bound to be one to suit your style and get you noticed. Kangol hats are some of the most popular hats out there but if that is not your style, there are plenty more.

2. Keep Cool – Nothing like a good hat to block out the sun and prevent harmful UV rays from beaming down onto your skin. And the wider the brim, the better to shield your face from the sun and keep you cooler in those hot summer months.

3. Turn a Bad Hair Day into a Good Day – Did you just roll out from under the covers with bed head and don’t have time to fix your hair? Or maybe you got the most awful haircut known to man and you need a quick and easy way to conceal it. Whatever the case, get a hat on! A hat is a great way to instantly transform your look from “blah” to “wow!” and since they come in so many styles from men’s dress hats to women’s hats, you can constantly update your look to suit your mood. Hats are gaining popularity so no one will ever guess what hair horror you are sporting under your stylish head gear.

4. Stay Warm – Hats can keep you cool but they can keep you warm too. By choosing a different type of fabric, you can get a hat that keeps heat in to keep you warm and toasty. The head is one of the top spots on your body that emits heat, so when you are in cold weather, a hat provides insulation to prevent the heat from flowing out of your body.

5. Protect Yourself from the Sun – According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), hats are an easy way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Try a sun-protective brand that shields your face, scalp, ears, and neck and features a wide brim, for example, western hats. Also look for darker colored hats that may protect you from more UV rays.

Jester Hat

What do the following have in common: Christening, Twenty-first, Graduation, Engagement, Wedding, Divorce and Wake? They are all major events that may well require some sort of celebratory soiree that includes inviting family, friends, the next door neighbour and Aunt Marjory and her dog. For such momentous events that mark the milestones of ones life, a party of a lifetime is needed for each one. A tall order indeed, especially when keeping up with the Jones’s. Long gone are the days when a homemade trifle and crepe paper party hat were enough to impress the regular party goer. Nowadays nothing less than a guest appearance form a C list celebrity and monkey that can juggle flaming poi will do.

There is another way of impressing the family and throwing a party that will be remembered for years to come without hiring Jordan and Peter to entertain the guests. Having a do at a stunning venue will ‘do’ the trick. The more unusual the place and the more elaborate the entertainment; the greater impression will be left on those in attendance. I recall one time when I was taken on a mystery trip for a company’s Christmas party, it outdid most celebrations I’ve ever attended and is the perfect example of party throwing.

The journey started at Stansted airport, clutching a ticket to Schiphol airport and directions to what appeared to be a low grade hotel on the outskirts of the Netherlands, with a name along the lines of Quality Inn, I was hedging my bets it was not a five star palace with duck down duvets and champers in the fridge. It was to be a red herring for the weekend ahead. Upon arrival, my spidey senses proved me right; worn carpets, a lumpy bed, a complementary Toblerone and a single serving of Gin and Tonic were what greeted me upon my arrival. Full of disappointment and downright fear for the weekend ahead, I slipped into my evening dress and heels deeply concerned that I was going to be greatly overdressed for whatever occasion was ahead of me. It was then that I learned that the last group trip courtesy of the company was a trip to a Belgian bowling alley. Oh dear.

In due time, the coach arrived to collect us all, and thankfully, most others were in attire appropriate for a sophisticated evening out, rather than a leisure centre activity. Full of expectation and apprehension, we endured a journey of at least an hour and a half. It took us through towns and villages, threatened to pull up outside a strip club and then continued into the dark countryside. As we were nearing the German border, we pulled into a gravel driveway lined with flaming torches, destination still not in sight. Tension and expectation mounting, we turned a corner and through the trees, up on a hill was a castle glowing by torchlight. Was this another herring of redness?

It was the real McCoy. As we alighted, we were greeted by stilt walkers and jugglers, violinists and jesters that danced. Across the drawbridge and under the portcullis we journeyed through candlelit tunnels to a grand room full of feasting, wine and cigars. This stunning room had a grand piano, chandeliers, chaise longues; gilded mirrors and authentic oil paintings. A small stone spiral staircase led downwards to what must have once been the castle’s cellars and storage rooms, but were for this evening, rooms in a medieval tavern, where musicians played while we drank and laughed. This was a venue with clout and made a major impression on us all and didn’t require the presence of a minor celeb to make the night, although the fire juggling monkey would have been a fitting touch.
