Step Back a Decade with 1990's Fashion
Every decade has their own unique style. From the flappers of the Roaring Twenties to the hippies of the sixties, each ten year period boasts some of its own unique trends. Some of these trends become classics, some fade away, and some come back into style many years after their original appearance. One decade that isn't talked about as much is the 1990's. Maybe it's because this decade occurred such a short time ago, but 1990's fashion hasn't reached the iconic status of decades like the sixties, seventies and eighties.
However, that certainly doesn't mean that 1990's fashion is non-existent or has nothing to offer. Let's take a look at some of the fashion trends and popular apparel that graced this interesting ten year period.
One such trend was the grunge movement. Minimalistic and casual, the grunge movement was all about faded jeans, flannel shirts worn over tanks or tees and big black boots like Doc Martens. Bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana started the grunge movement and carried it through the decade until the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
1990's fashion was also about streamlined, classic pieces. No more shoulder pads, giant hairstyles, leg warmers or massive pieces of costume jewelry. Jeans and trousers were worn unpleated and slim, and blazers were less boxy and more fitted.
The preppy look stayed in full swing during the 90's, with cardigan sweater sets, khaki pants, and delicate strands of pearls gracing campuses and offices everywhere. However, casual clothes were popular as well. Fitted, screen print T-shirts, slim jeans and athletic shoes were often the uniform of choice for teens and young adults everywhere.
A discussion about 1990's fashion couldn't be complete without the mention of the bohemian look. Gypsy skirts, flare leg pants, platform shoes, patchwork clothing and other flower-child inspired ensembles experienced a renaissance in the 90's that continues today.
Yet another 1990's fashion trend that still stands today is athletic wear as fashion. Tracksuits, exercise shorts, warm up jackets and sneakers were, and still are, ensembles that many fashionable people wear to this day.
Mostly, the 1990's were about paring down and making do with less. The extravagance and showiness of the seventies and eighties took a backseat to the minimal styles of Generation X. There is no one look or theme that defines the 1990's, rather, it was a decade when everyone discovered their own comfortable, yet individual style.
