1930's Fashion – A Study in Contrasts
1930's fashion can be hard to define. Depending on economic standing and social class, 1930's fashion ranged from hand-sewn ensembles to amazing couture. One theme of 1930's fashion was femininity. Gone were the bosom-flattening styles of the twenties. In the 30's, it was all about accentuating feminine curves and making the most of one's natural figure.
Daywear was often simple and neat, with conservative dresses being the uniform for women. Bustlines were rounded and waists were accentuated, while skirts were kept to a conservative knee or calf length. Fabrics were varied, and new choices like crepe, silk and rayon were seen. One innovation that became commonplace on women's clothing in the 1930's was the zipper.
When it came to swimwear, more skin was shown with higher cut suits that allowed women to get a suntan. Beach outfits featuring skirts and hats were also commonly seen. And for pool wear, there was the classic sarong that is still popular today.
Hats were an important part of 1930's fashion. However, the forehead covering styles of the 20's were gone and replaced by pillbox hats and berets that allowed women to showcase their faces and romantic, curled hairstyles. Wide brim hats were also seen, often adorned with ribbon, flowers and feathers.
For evening wear, there were several choices. The floor-length, semi-fitted gown became popular and was often crafted from shiny, eye-catching fabrics like lame adorned with glass beading. However, many people in the 1930's were feeling the effects from the Depression and simply had no need for evening wear. For the hardworking people of the 1930's who were economically challenged, simple yet feminine clothing was the standard.
For men, the double breasted suit was introduced and quickly became the outfit of choice. Prints like checks, plaids and stripes became popular for menswear in the 30's as well. In the mid to late 30's, there was the suit style known as the London Cut. Wide shoulders and tapered sleeves were the center of this business look that many men wore to the office. Another style called the Palm Beach Suit was the summer look for fashionable men and featured light fabrics like linen and seersucker and paler colors like cream and taupe.
